3 Injured when Car Hits HISD School Bus: On Safety, What’s the Answer?

Serious school bus accidents always capture headlines, but statistically, a school bus is just about the safest form of transportation you can take. On the downside, that form of transportation will always drop you off at a school rather than at a more entertaining travel destination.

Around 24 million school children ride school buses for about 4 billion travel miles a year to and from their schools. On average, only around 6 children die annually in school bus accidents. By comparison, our Houston personal injury attorneys note that over 800 children die each year on their way to school by means of other forms of transportation such as parents’ cars, on foot, or on bicycles.

There’s some controversy about what to do to make school buses even safer. Some advocates want seat belts on school buses, while others point out that studies indicate that school bus seat belts actually decrease the children’s safety. 3 Injured when Car Broadsides HISD School Bus

School bus accidents often result from another driver’s negligence. As an example, our Houston personal injury attorneys mention that Friday morning about 6:30 a.m. in southwest Houston, a southbound car on Beechnut by Braeburn Valley broadsided the driver’s side of an HISD school bus. The bus had 3 students on board from Scarborough High School as well as the bus driver.

The bus had apparently pulled away from a stop sign and was about to turn left onto Beechnut when an eastbound Honda sedan slammed into the driver’s side of the bus. Witnesses reportedly said that the Honda was moving at a high rate of speed and looked like it had actually accelerated just prior to the crash. The driver of the Honda received rush transport to the hospital in critical condition.

One of the students aboard the HISD school bus received transport to the hospital. Another student, treated at the scene, later complained of leg pain and received transport to the hospital.

Accident investigators are looking into the causes of the high-speed broadside crash. (Sources: click2houston.com, and Dale Lezon, Houston Chronicle, 2/15/13)
