Galveston Mayor Joe Jaworski estimated that about half a million motorcycle enthusiasts attended the weekend motorcycle rally on Galveston Island. The mayor formed part of the parade that kicked off the event, and he proclaimed the rally a success for Galveston, Texas and for biking aficionados in spite of the handful of accidents that claimed 3 lives and sent one man to the hospital in critical condition.
Guy Dale Stratton of Houston ran into the side of a school bus on his 2003 Yamaha on Friday afternoon. The accident trapped him underneath the bus in the 1200 block of 26th Street. Rescue workers extracted him and transported him to the hospital in critical but stable condition with severe accident injuries. According to police, Mr. Stratton, who was not wearing a helmet, might have failed to stop at a stop sign just prior to the accident.
Later on that Friday night, a 34-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman received fatal injuries in the 7800 block of I-45 North. The 2011 Harley Davidson that they were riding at high speed struck a curb. The driver then lost control of the Harley and crashed. The man and woman, who accounts say might have been husband and wife, were not wearing helmets at the time of theirmotorcycle accident and died at the scene of the bike crash.
Matthew Taylor, 19, was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed on his 1994 Yamahamotorcycle. He had entered the eastbound lanes to dodge traffic when his bike struck a 1985 Chevrolet pickup truck head-on at Harborside Drive and 51st Street. Mr. Taylor received fatal injuries from the accident, and the driver of the pickup truck received transport to the hospital.
The Galveston motorcycle accident attorneys at Denena & Points mourn the loss of the 3 motorcyclists who died during the weekend motorcycle rally. Our thoughts and prayers are with the surviving family members, and our best wishes for a safe recovery go out to Mr. Guy Stratton.
We note that for an island rally of 500,000 bikers, such a small number of serious accidents show the responsibility and care taken by the biking community that attended the weekend festivities. The tragic loss of 3 members of that community during the rally adds a somber note to the weekend that could remind others to drive carefully and wear their helmets. Their unfortunate accidents might serve to remind others of safety precautions that could save their lives.
