Severe Rollover Wreck Injuries occur Frequently, in part due to Low U.S. Rollover Resistance Standards

Rollover crashes in the United States generate a high proportion of the roadway fatalities and severe injuries that occur each year. The Galveston personal injury attorneys at Denena Points, PC note that there are several ways in which these catastrophic accidents cause their crippling injuries:

  • Collapse of the vehicle’s chassis, trapping or crushing the vehicle occupants.
  • Vehicle ejection, where an occupant is thrown from the vehicle to experience high impact forces when they meet the road or another vehicle at high speed. On average, 75% of vehicle occupants who are ejected die from the severity of their injuries.
  • Roof crush as the vehicle rolls over.
  • Neck and back injuries as vehicle occupants experience the extreme forces of a rollover.
  • Impacts with vehicle interiors, other vehicle occupants, or too close contact with airbags as the vehicle rolls over. We note that airbags deploy at speeds of about 200 mph, which can leave passengers and drivers with burns, lacerations, and broken bones.

The only parts of a passenger vehicle intended to contact the roadway are its tires. But when a vehicle flips into a rollover, all the other parts of a vehicle might impact the road as well. And because the United States does not have high rollover resistance standards, when other parts of your passenger vehicle meet the road in a rollover, they tend to buckle, crush, and warp, injuring or ejecting vehicle occupants. Our Galveston personal injury attorneys strongly believe that automakers need to define and implement improved rollover resistance standardsthat will help more drivers and passengers survive rollover wrecks without life threatening serious injuries.
