Miscalculating Left Turns accounts for Large Numbers of Critical Pre-Crash Events resulting in Injuries or Fatalities

Specifically, the authors of the study analyzed accident to determine the critical pre-crash events that led to the accidents. They found that around 36% of the vehicles involved in the crashes were turning or crossing at intersections just prior to the wrecks. Distracted drivers, fatigued drivers, drunk drivers, and drivers that miscalculated the gaps between approaching cars caused hundreds of crashes at intersections because they turned left in front of approaching vehicles when they should not have.
