ATV Manufacturers need to Disclose the Risks of Injury to Children that ride Adult-Sized ATVs

A study published in the journal Neurosurgery Focus in November 2011 documented that children under 16 years of age generally don’t have the strength, weight or size (particularly the arms’ reach) to create longitudinal, lateral, or vertical operational stability while riding adult-sized ATVs. This greatly increases their risk of having an ATV rollover accident causing serious or fatal injuries.

The study mentioned that children 16 and under represent only about 17% of the riders of these vehicles, but they suffer 26% of the ATV accident deaths and 31% of the injuries. The young people’srisk of being injured in an ATV accident was between 4 and 12 times higher than for an adult rider. Yet ATV manufacturers don’t adequately warn parents of the dangers if their children ride these vehicles that are unsuited to their size, strength, and weight.

Our Pearland rollover accident attorneys urge you to educate your family about the risks of riding ATVs. Most ATVs are designed to accommodate a single rider, and so the more people riding on a single ATV, the greater the risk of an accident. ATVs are particularly prone to rollovers, and children under 16 have less risk of injury if they ride ATVs specifically designed for their age and size. Be safe.
