2 men hospitalized from tanker rig rollover wreck in Jim Wells County
Baytown tanker truck accident lawyers note a dangerous rollover wreck that sent the truck’s driver and passenger to the hospital with injuries. On Tuesday afternoon in Jim Wells County, the driver of an eastbound 18-wheeler began to veer off the road on FM 624 close to Highway 281. The tanker rig’s driver overcorrected the truck’s course as he tried to get back on the road. He lost control of the tanker truck and it flipped over onto its side and began to leak light crude oil.
Good Samaritans were able to extract the passenger safely from the tanker truck, but could not help the trapped driver. The passenger received transport to a hospital in Alice, Texas for his injuries.
Rescuers from the Alice Fire Department extracted the driver of the 18-wheeler, William Jason Pugh, using the Jaws of Life. A Halo Flight carried Mr. Pugh to a hospital to receive treatment for the injuries he received in the tanker truck rollover wreck.
Around 30 barrels of light crude oil ended up spilled on the road. Our Baytown tanker truck accident lawyers remark that, fortunately, the oil did not catch fire. Crews closed the lanes at the site of wreck for most of the afternoon. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was set to oversee the cleanup crew hired by the trucking company that owned the tanker rig.
Reportedly, driver fatigue is suspected as the cause of the tanker truck rollover. Trucking is a time-sensitive, delivery-oriented business, and many truckers drive long hours over monotonous roadways to make their goals. Even with mandated rest breaks, cumulative fatigue can be a problem for long haul drivers.
While driver fatigue goes under-reported as a cause of accidents, a large percentage of truck wrecks are attributed to fatigue. Many 18-wheeler accidents result when a driver, nodding off at the wheel, suddenly wakes as his vehicle is headed off the highway. Sudden attempts to correct the course of the mammoth rigs can unbalance cargo loads or result in jack-knife accidents.
