Two Firefighters Lose Lives 2 Injured in Bryan Knights of Columbus Blaze
A deadly fire was reported in the Bryan, Texas Knights of Columbus lodge very late on Friday night. Our structural collapse attorneys note that the lodge was apparently not in use at the time the fire was reported.
One of the firefighters inside the lodge fighting the blaze, 36-year-old Eric Wallace, called for help saying he was low on air. He was an experienced Fire Lieutenant, a 13-year veteran of Bryan’s Fire Department.
A team consisting of 54-year-old Greg Pickard, 21-year-old Mitchel Moran, and 30-year-old Ricky Mantey Jr. were sent in as rescue. But once they were in, the roof of the lodge collapsed in the fire. Rapid response teams pulled the men out of the collapsed building, but Eric Wallace died at the scene. Greg Pickard died Saturday of his injuries at a Galveston hospital. He was an experienced Fire Lieutenant with 32 years in the Department. Both Ricky Mantey Jr. and Mitchel Moran remain in the Galveston hospital with serious burn injuries.

Structural Collapses in Buildings Weakened by Fire are the Source of Deadly Danger to Firefighters
Firefighters suffer large numbers of fatal accidents and serious injuries due to structural collapses in buildings weakened by fire. Our structural collapse attorneys emphasize that fire weakens structural connections and supports to an unpredictable degree. The danger is very real of being struck by falling timbers and pinned under burning debris when structural members or connectors weakened by fire give way.
The dangers of full or partial structural collapses don’t go away just because a fire goes out. Weaknesses in the structure can cause burned floors to collapse, walls to fall in, or roof timbers to suddenly give way, injuring fire investigators, building owners coming back to look at damage after the fire, or the curious who just want to see what happened.
Even well trained and experienced fire investigators and firefighters can’t always tell what parts of a burned building are safe and what parts have been dangerously weakened by fire. So our structural collapse attorneys caution you to never enter a building weakened by fire unless fire marshals have declared the building safe.
