On Monday morning in Buda, Texas on FM 1626 by Jerry’s Lane, a dump truck driver hauling a load of sand lost control of his heavy vehicle and crushed a car. Two people were in the car that the out-of-control dump truck landed on: Trisha Marie Foulkrod and her young grandson in his car seat.
Texas DPS officials indicated that Trisha Foulkrod must have seen the careening dump truck approaching because she had pulled over in her own lane as far as she could to try and avoid being hit. But the dump truck crushed the car against the guardrail. Ms. Foulkrod was killed in the tragic crash, but her grandson was found in his car seat unharmed in what a DPS trooper called “a miracle.”
We often write about defective car seats, but the young boy on FM 1626 must have been properly restrained in a well-designed and well-made car seat. We wish we knew what type it was so that it could benefit others. Our Harris County truck crash injury lawyers note that no word was given on what caused the dump truck driver to lose control of the massive vehicle and crash into the car. Then on Friday morning, two people died in Harris County when a trash truck approaching the north toll plaza on the North Sam Houston Parkway plowed into a Dodge Charger. The impact hurled the Charger into a Honda and then into the median, where the vehicle burst into flames. The driver of the Dodge Charger and the driver of the trash truck died in the fiery tollway crash. The Precinct 4 deputy and his wife who were in the Honda received transport to Memorial Hermann Hospital with serious injuries from the crash.
Northwest Volunteer Fire Department spokesmen said that medical conditions might have helped caused the trash truck driver to crash. The severity of the deadly, fiery tollway crash shut down the toll plaza, all lanes of the North Sam Houston Parkway, and EZ Tag lanes for most of the day. These two crashes reveal the disadvantage that car occupants face in an impact with a heavy commercial truck. Our Harris County truck crash injury lawyers emphasize that loaded tractor-trailer trucks can easily weigh 80,000 pounds or more. Your car might weigh around 2,000 pounds. And your fully loaded pickup truck might weigh 6,000 pounds. No matter how heavily you load your pickup or SUV, you’re still at a distinct disadvantage in an impact against a massive commercial truck.
And in Texas, truck traffic and your risk of a truck crash increase practically daily. We have tanker and equipment trucks traveling constantly back and forth from the oil fields. The Port of Houston is the busiest shipping hub in the United States. And much of the shipping traffic from the west coast and from southern ports travels through our state. In trucks. There is also the daily traffic due to sanitation, lawn maintenance, utility, local shipping, and local construction trucks. You name it, and Texas has trucks for it. Lots of them.
