12 People Hospitalized after Storm Collapses Outdoor Pavilion in PA

Around 40 people were gathered Friday at Paradise Township Park in Lancaster County, PA for a youth baseball tournament when a sudden storm blew in. They took shelter under the pavilion to wait out the storm. The winds picked up and collapsed the 50-foot by 75-foot metal roof of the pavilion. Then the pavilion itself fell over.

Three vehicles and many of the people were trapped under the debris from the collapsed pavilion in Paradise Township Park. At least 12 people, mostly children, were taken to a local hospital for their injuries. Some injuries were serious and included head and neck injuries, back injuries, substantial lacerations, and broken legs.

Some people attending the Lancaster County tournament had taken shelter under a canopy over a concession stand. When the canopy blew away and wrapped itself around a light pole around 40 feet distant, they took shelter in the concrete concession building. Those inside the concession building did not suffer injuries and were unaware the pavilion had collapsed until they emerged from their shelter later.

Several large trees in the vicinity of Paradise Township Park were toppled and blasted apart by the strong wind gusts. There were reports that a funnel cloud had touched down during the storm, but those reports have not yet been confirmed. 21,000 homes in the Lancaster County area were without power after the storm tore down power lines. Storm Winds Present Deadly Dangers to those Attending Outdoor Activities

Wind gusts from passing storms present major hazards to those who attend outdoor events. The deadly stage collapse at the Sugarland concert at the Indiana State Fair about a year ago was attributed to the force of winds collapsing an improperly rigged stage. Since that collapse that killed 7 people and injured dozens more, steps have been taken to ensure that major outdoor events are evacuated and people take shelter when storms begin to threaten.

For small gatherings like the one in Lancaster County where the advent of the storm was apparently very sudden, high risks still remain. Those attending any outdoor event or engaging in outdoor activities should always try to make sure that secure shelter, like the concrete concession building in Paradise Township Park, is nearby just in case they should need it. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those injured in the pavilion collapse in Pennsylvania.
