10 Carnival Safety Tips to Help You and Your Kids Enjoy Texas’ Summer

The Texas summer carnival season is here! And our carnival ride injury attorneys know that this season means fun roadside carnivals, amusement rides at the beach, and especially water parks and exciting splash rides. It also means the occasional injury to riders. The carnival ride injury attorneys at Denena Points, PC and the U.S. CPSC provides the following 10 carnival safety tips to help you and your kids enjoy the rides at the Texas summer carnivals and water parks:

  1. Trust your instincts. If a ride looks dilapidated, a ride operator looks inattentive, or the ride looks like it might be having problems, don’t ride it and don’t your children ride it. Exercise your own parental responsibilities. Don’t let the carnival or ride venue lull you into a false sense of security that could lead you to unadvisedly give away your parental responsibilities.
  1. Be a cautious rider or parent. Our carnival ride injury attorneys urge you to use the same good judgment in picking appropriate rides that you would use in picking appropriate toys or dinners.
  1. Watch the ride in action before you try it yourself or let your children try it. Read and listen to warnings and instructions. And explain to children what to expect from the ride and the safety precautions they should take (like not standing up during the ride or sticking out limbs).
  1. If children indicate any fear of a ride, don’t put them on it. Our carnival ride injury attorneys emphasize that many children have been injured or died because they tried to exit a ride in motion that made them afraid.
  1. Obey all age, height, weight, and health restrictions. Those restrictions are there for a reason: to ensure your safety. They are based upon actual past experience with injuries and fatalities on particular rides and ride designs.
  1. Follow all instructions about seating order, positioning, or loading. Some rides put smaller people in certain seating orders so that centrifugal forces and larger people won’t crush them as the ride moves.
  1. Always use the available safety restraints and safety equipment. But be aware that no equipment is foolproof. Don’t test the safety limitations of the equipment. Many riders have been injured or killed because they removed safety restraints or misused safety equipment. Your shoulder harness, lap bar, or other restraint should fit securely. Our carnival ride injury attorneys stress that if your restraint doesn’t fit snugly, you are not safe on the ride and should get off. The large girth of some people prevents safety restraints from fitting them properly. And some children are too small to be held snugly by the restraints. In either scenario, the rider is not properly safe. And should exit the ride and seek another.
  1. Never extend hands, feet, arms, legs, or heads out as you ride. Many victims have been trapped and killed between cars or between cars and tracks because of this very act. We know that it’s an instinct that overtakes almost all riders, but don’t do it. Your attempt to show off could be your last act.
  1. Teach your children how to find you or wait for you in a specific place if they become separated from you or lost. Pick a landmark to go to. Our carnival ride injury attorneys remind you to use the “buddy system,” so at least two people are always together, and have contact devices like cell phones with each “buddy” pair if possible.
  1. Always be aware that you and your children are getting on high velocity, heavy machinery or risking water hazards like drowning on water rides. Don’t take foolish chances and don’t take your safety for granted. Use good sense. Remember that the Magic Kingdom of Disney isn’t really magic. It’s just a well-crafted illusion. And safety could be just as illusory if you don’t use reasonable safety precautions.
