We’ve written periodically about the dangers of speeding, the high number of speed-related crash injuries and deaths in Texas, and the ways in which speed increases the risks of serious injuries, vehicle ejection, and death. But when a driver’s in a hurry and frustration takes over, safe driving habits often get left behind too. With deadly results. Speeding leads to serious injuries and deadly Houston crashes on an almost daily basis.
For instance, last week, an 18-wheeler rammed into the back of a car in southwest Houston. The impact propelled the car then into the back of an SUV, trapping the occupants of the car inside their smashed vehicle until firefighters could extract them. Both people from the car were hospitalized in serious condition. (Matt Aufdenspring, KPRC click2houston.com, 12/6/13)
Speeding Past an Accident or Construction Zone can be Deadly
Drivers not only speed as a matter of course on the roads. They also rarely slow down as they should as they pass accident scenes or construction zones. And sometimes the hurried drivers lose their own lives. For instance, on a Sunday morning in mid-November, a woman in a black Nissan suffered a rollover on the Sam Houston Tollway near West Belfort, but fortunately she experienced only minor injuries. She exited her vehicle to take stock of the damage. And the driver of a flatbed pickup pulled over to assist her. Sadly, the driver of a Toyota Corolla sped over a hill, didn’t see the pulled-over truck in time, and was decapitated by a part of that truck. (Yang Wang, Houston Chronicle, 11/17/13)
Turning Vehicles present High Risks for Speeding Drivers Too
More recently, a speeding SUV slammed into the side of a turning Houston Metro bus about midnight on Saturday on Scott Road. The driver of the SUV was hospitalized in critical condition. And a bus passenger was hospitalized in stable condition. (Ryan Jones, KPRC click2houston.com, 12/7/13)
